International Trails Day Celebration 2017

June 3 and 4, 2017 

In Conjunction with the 15th Annual International Trails Day 2017

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails to promote trail development, the use of trails & the healthy lifestyle they encourage”. Naturally Active for Life Victoria County (Est. 2011) in partnership has been celebrating International Trails Day since June 2012.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park & Local Hiking Guides will lead hikes for our 6th Annual Celebration.

Hiking Look-off Pit Privy

You climb up and up and your reward is at the top! Large flat rocks give you a nice place to sit and enjoy the 360º views of the entire Clyburn Brook canyon and the Atlantic coastline from Cape Smokey to Ingonish. Gaze back at the mountains, the sheer rocky face of Franey Mountain, or the river winding through the valley, 425 m below. Keep an eye out for wildlife – moose like this habitat too.

Length: 7.4 km (4.6 mi) loop
Elevation: 95 – 430 m (310 – 1,410 ft)
Time: 2 – 3 hours
Significant Features: Transition from Acadian to boreal forest, mountain and ocean vistas
Steep climb. Rugged sections. Caution: Keep young children away from the steep cliffs.

Trailhead: Turn off the Cabot Trail just north of the Clyburn River and follow the fire access road for about a kilometre to a small parking lot

Hiking Look-off

This breathtaking trail winds through Acadian mixed forest and stunted taiga as it climbs to the wind-swept highlands plateau. It offers 360º views spanning the barrens, the dramatic Aspy fault, coastal villages far below and mountains reaching the most northern tip of Cape Breton. Continue along a narrower footpath to Mica Hill’s remarkable outcrops of quartz and mica.

Length: 7.9 km (4.9 mi) return
Elevation: 260 – 410 m (850 – 1345 ft)
Time: 3 – 3.5 hours
Significant Features: Highlands taiga, mica outcrop
Gradual climb.

Trailhead: Take the Paquette Lake road and park at the lake
