Our Baddeck website (www.ourbaddeck.com), along with community members Jennifer Ripley and Tammy MacSween, have been talking since a couple of weeks about adding a new page to the community website.
The mission of this new page, to be called Community Connections, would be to welcome new people to the area by connecting the newcomers with friendly residents who would introduce the newbies to businesses, institutions, programs and personalities within our community. For example, we might try and connect a retiring couple from away with local retired couple or with somebody who moved here a few years ago and has gone through the same “getting acquainted” issues. We might try and connect a new family interested in small farming with members of the Farmer’s Market community. Young families with children would be interested in playgroups for kids, schooling issues, daycare options, recreation programs, service clubs, etc. Jobs and business opportunities could be promoted under the Community Connections site. Supporting and welcoming new residents to our community would be the focus of this site.
We will start with a welcome package folder that would give you some of the basic information such as when is the garbage picked up, who is your county councillor, location of the employment centre, how to get a doctor or a dentist, brochures from local businesses, welcome to the community coupons. Eventually we would hope to develop a business directory – where do you find a electrician, carpenter or a mechanic. Where can you get a pizza, lumber, firewood, rent a house, buy a home / land.
To develop this program we need volunteers – if you feel you could help in any way or can offer advice please drop us an e mail at email@example.com .
