Victoria County RCMP warning residents of phone scam

January 5, 2016, Victoria County… RCMP would like all residents to be aware of a current phone scam threatening people that the RCMP will arrest them for tax evasion.

Recently Victoria County residents have received a phone calls from a person identifying themselves as being with the Canada Revenue Agency and that the person unpaid taxes and if the money is not paid the RCMP will arrest them.  The caller was a man who called himself John Parker and the number was 613-707-5856.  This particular scam is very complex as a second caller will follow-up claiming to be an RCMP officer confirming that the person will be arrested.  They will use a fake caller id that will show the local RCMP detachment phone number on a call display and may use the name of a local officer in the area as this information is available on the internet.

The person will threaten that you will be arrested, property seized and credit cards cancelled but, will offer payment plans to fix the problem.  The payments are to be made through Western Union or Money Gram services.

RCMP are asking anyone who receives this call to hang up and contact local RCMP if they are concerned and to please remember the following advice:

1)    Never sent money through Western Union or similar services unless you know exactly who the person is to receive it, companies do not do business this way and certainly not Revenue Canada.

2)    Ask for contact information and call back number of the person who called you.

3)    Speak with your local bank or credit union if concerned.

4)    Don’t be intimated by aggressive or bullying on the phone and just hang up.

And remember you worked hard for your money don’t let someone steal it from you over the phone.
